Well this situation already happened in 1971 when US stopped backing its currency by Gold because it had already stopped being a viable system. The current paper money is backed by nothing but a promise “I Promise to pay the bearer” as seen in the Indian Rupee notes. In case of US dollar, even this promise is no more there, and it is just a “legal tender” whatever it means
