Jun 0716While reading comments on another article of mine, I realized this fact – There is more political freedom and more political opportunities for people from minority religions in India than in USA.
How many politicians can you name from USA who are non Christians?? Not really!!! OK, how many non Christians have become governors of states or President of USA? Note that this world’s strongest(?) democracy -USA has been an independent country for over two centuries!!
Let us come back to India, the world’s largest democracy that has been an independent nation for just over a half century! Let us see how many prominent non hindu politicians can we name from India. Our present President is a Muslim!
Our present Prime minister is a Sikh!
Our present Leader of Opposition is a Hindu!
Our present Defense minister and earlier defense ministers were/are Christians!!
Our Previous Prime Minister was a Hindu!
We have already had 3 Muslim presidents!
There have been so many non-Hindu governors, ministers and chief ministers in India. Why is there no such minority political leadership in US? Which do you think is a great democracy now? India or USA? Or is it because Hindus in general are more tolerant towards other religions, while other religions are not? Remember that India is a country which broke itself into three pieces 60 years ago when the religious minorities in India demanded separate nation (Pakistan and Bangladesh were the two new Muslim countries created out of India)!! And still India did not become a Hindu country, it continues to be a secular country, thanks to the secular Hindus and today more Muslims live in India than in Pakistan or in Bangladesh!!
Once again, I am a proud Indian!!

It’s a shame what happened to Bangladesh. I hope the world steps up and helps them.

You rightly said that “”on the basis of relegion one should not attain higher post”"
But then in that case you are wrongly asking “”why Indian politics is not allowing a Muslim to the Prime Minister post”"
I agree with abdul, that the so called secular parties are only using minorities as votebanks. How long will they continue to keep saying ‘backward communities should be brought up in the society’ ??? When will they really ‘bring up’ the backward communities?

we should ask this question to the ‘’secular” congress party which ruled/ruling India for over five decades. why congress? why? -
India is secular democratic country, hence thinking of Hindu PM or Sikh PM is nonsense… on the basis of relegion one should not attain higher post… our constitution doesnt permit that actually…. recently people proudly (!!?) making point that India had many muslim presidents, chief ministers and governors… My point is why Indian politics is not allowing a Muslim to the Prime Minister post? why?

Good observations Gurudev. As Rajiv Malhotra noted in his latest article, the power dynamics in America is shaped by the culture of whiteness. In terms of power sharing, how much real, institutional power one can win in America depends on where one falls in the “”whiteness scale”". Rajiv writes:
I see three dimensions to whiteness in America today: (1) as a secular blend of race, ethnicity and culture; (2) as a civic religion based on Judeo-Christianity/Bible; and (3) as a socioeconomic status. How White you are is measured in this 3-dimensional model. All other identities are based on difference from whiteness.
By contrast in India, the equivalent power-sharing dynamic is “”hinduness”". How “”Hindu”" one is can be as simple as where one falls on the Gandhi scale of hinduness i.e. on the scale of non-violence.

Nice to hear an Indian voice from USA!! -
I cant believe this because I just talked about this in my politics class! This is what I exactly asked my teacher, “”Why is it that there are not that many minorities in this country?”" Before she could answer I said, “”We have muslim pres. etc..”".
All she said, “”umm thats interesting”". What a fucked up answer. She obviously had no idea what to say!
