Today I just saw Outlook Editor Mr.Vinod Mehta on CNN IBN’s face the nation talking something which did not make any sense at all!!
He accused the 24/7 channels of being biased on reservation policy and telecasting only nationwide student protests.
Mr. Mehta, any person who reads your outlook magazine can be absolutely clear that you are infact supporting the quota system. Now aren’t you biased? And you are accusing the 24/7 channels for the simple reason that they are not biased on the same side as yours
Recently I was shocked to read an article by you titled Eyes, Ears And Minds Closed in your magazine where in you said India’s middle class is hostile to the empowerment of the poor?!!!!
Mr Mehta can you please tell me the percentage of middle class in India 10 years back and their percentage today? Where did this massive increase in Indian middle class population come from?? Were they created by a magci wand? Any sensible person knows that most middle class families in India today are those who were poor just about 10 years back. It is the boom in the meritocracy based IT and ITES sector and other sectors which have helped these poor families move up the ladder. And do you think these very people who were once poor will be against today’s poor?
And what is the funny basis of your argument? The anti-quota protests?? Who told you anti-quota protests are anti-poor? Quota is based on caste, not on economic background. Has your magazine or you done any survey as to how many of these anti-quota protesters support reservation based on economic background. Almost all will support it, because IT MAKES SENSE.
You who claim to be unbiased, why haven’t you reported about poor upper caste students who dont have either quotas or money?
It is highly unfortunate that an editor of a responsible magazine like yours equates protests against caste based divisive politics of quota system to middle class v/s poor. Do you mean to say there are no SC/ST/OBC in middle class and upper class or do you mean there are no poor people in the so called upper caste?? I can show you thousands of both categories just in my place.
Also I observed that on CNN IBN you tried to mislead the audience by talking about Affirmative action in USA by comparing it to quota systems in India. But you never told in the debate the fact that affirmative action does not have any concession on merit. In affirmative action even a reserved catergory candidate needs to have the same merit as required by general category candidates and only then the reserved category candidate will be given prominence over the general category candidates. In other words unlike Indian Quota system there is no reverse discrimination in affirmative action practiced in America. You either do not know the fact or you wanted the audience to believe that there is quota system in USA!!! Mr. Mehta, you cannot fool all the people all the time.

The problem of poor can easily be tackled by simply opening more schools and colleges. I spoke to a greek lady in US and she said people in greece are well educated but no jobs. All this is because of stupid socialism which restricts growth. A simple explanaton in terms of economics. If the govt reduce the taxes on petrol the price will fall by around Rs. 20. i.e final price Rs. 30. Imagine the automobile population will increase 10 times. Job opportunities will increase multifold right from production to marketing. Similar is the case of electicity, bank interest( spread), insurance and lot of other industries. There is plent of scope to reduce cost everywhere and boost growth and everyone will have jobs. There will be then no need for reservation. I will put that in simple terms. If we have a cake at home for 3 people and there are 5 members we may fight for it. At the same time if we have a cake for 10 and only 5 people to eat, it becomes a non issue. Thats it……

hey… vinod mehta is right… heres the evidence…. do u know IIMs have implemented OBC quota to the extent of 7%. And do you know what was the cutoff set for OBC… it was exactly the same as open category…. i m sure you would not know this…. and how would you know it…. none of your 24/7 news channels even bothered to show a detailed report about it… now you tell me whats wrong with this quota system when the fundamental argument you anti reservation people are posing is that of killing of merit…. which is clearly taken care off…. all middle class people are hypocrats buddy…. i too belong to the middle class…. and i am ashamed of it…. middle class in this country will never help the poor India grow …. thts a fact of life…. n we have to live with it…. its people like vinod mehta who are atleast making an attempt to show us the right direction…… just change your middle class “”me and myself only”" mentality ….

Lets agree that there is a lot left undone at the grass roots level. We definitely need quotas, but not in institues of higher learning.
Media in this whole episode has played a biased role. It has since day one taken sides. This is not the role of the media. Media is a very important flag bearer of any democracy. It just so happens it suits me this time around and so I don’t bother.

The Media is full of leftist scumbags who view the world thru the prism of “”Exploiting class”" Vs “”Exploited class”". That is why it simply doesn’t go into their heads that there are poor, disadvantaged people belonging to all castes, communities, religions and regions. And his middle class theory is laughable. The middle class never was a monolithic community it includes people from every caste, community, religion and region and as such it can never suppress or will it ever try to suppress the poor as a “”Class”" and neither is it preventing nor will it ever prevent any poor from rising up to join its ranks

Information is an eye opener.
I am trying to host a web site to address the College/University quota’s system. To start with the site basically will have all the universities and its affiliated colleges with offered courses and number of seats. The information can be expanded as we go on.
I am looking for participation where by the participants can themselves maintain the data by universities/colleges. Can anyone help get me in touch with the protester panel?

Exactly, thats what even my argument is. The govt must ensure that every child gets quality primary education and should remove all kinds of reservation in higher education and jobs. Only then can we build a knowledge based first class society. What government is doing is pure votebank politics which is proved by the simple fact that the proposed reservations are based on an outdated 1931 census!! I am convinced there is no social welfare in government’s proposal, its pure divisive politics.

While I agree with your point of view that reservations based on economic background would make a lot more sense than those based on caste, I have a more fundamental problem with all forms of reservations. If the objective of the government is to bring the economically (or socially) backward sections of the society at par with the rest, then why are they not focusing on expanding and improving the country’s primary and secondary education system? Wont this eradicate the problem from the root?
If each and every child, regardless of his cast, creed of financial background has an equal opportunity to go to school and receive good quality education which makes his application to college as stong as that of any other student, then where will there be a need for reservations to exist at all? Surely the Cambrdige educated PM and the Harvard educated FM have figured this out. Surely they also know the the government does not have the required skills, machinery or the motivation to make this happen by themselves, and therefore primary and secondary education will have to to be contracted out to the private sector and merely regulated by government. Why then is privatization of primary education such a taboo in our country? How is it any different from the government allotting contracts to private parties for wiring villages as part of the Rural Electrification programme? Just like the CERC sets guidelines for electicity, a government appointed body can regulate primary and secondary education!
But ofcourse there is a catch to all this – even the mightiest attempt to tackle the problem in the logical way (as stated above) would take 5 -6 years to implement, and the UPA government will be long gone by then as they would have either lost in the next elections or lost the support of thier communist allies. So Mr. Singh is in a bit of a catch 22 situation. He can either choose to take the path less travelled (sorry to use the most cliched line of all time) and implement a primary education programme at least 10 times larger than the Sarva Shiksha Abhyan, or he can implement caste based reservations which gives him some chances of winning the ST/SC/OBC vote in the next elections.
