There lies the solution
Millions of solar panels and power storage units floating in outer space. . Solar energy is captured from the sun to generate power and the power is transmitted to local storage units spread all over the earth on demand in the form of direct contact lightning strikes to ground based storage units for immediate consumption.

I think it was Asimov’s idea of collecting solar energy in space sending it to earth.
NASA had been toying with this idea for decades – collecting solar energy in space through photo voltaic panels and sending to earth station through microwaves. (http://www.nss.org/settlement/ssp/library/index.htm). Other option is to bring the sun to earth , controlled fusion as suggested by Indrajit. Either way, the cost implications are high besides other factors.

The efficiency of photovoltaic cells has increased to over 40%, (http://www.physorg.com/news99904887.html) and can expect it to touch 50%, whereby we can collect more energy from limited area or less cost per kW of energy generated. The daily average solar energy incident over India varies from 4-7 kWh/m2, depending upon location.

yes Indrajit, this was just an alternate thought.. even I feel controlled fusion is a much more practical approach.. the issue with me is many a times I see practicality in what others otherwise would prefer to call 'fantasy' :)

your idea of harnessing the suns energy is very good.
( although as a clincher: putting up a massive infrastructure of scales suitable to provide power to the entire planet and a backup of only a few days(compared to the 150 years reserve nature has created for us seems rather awkward..but overall it's good thinking).
my personal idea is controlled fusion..which, if achieved, WILL solve all power problems, for ETERNITY and without ANY pollution (i.e. a clean solution, even millions of panels in space is going to pullute space a million times over).
and once again, ""always use the word 'impossible'..."" stands.
