The ongoing controversy over the Sethusamudram project actually had to be a rational debate over the economic benefits of the projects V/s its negative geographical impacts, ecological destruction and loss of a heritage site.
Now, thanks to the irresponsible affidavit by the government of India and to the politicians of DMK this rational debate has turned into a communal issue full of hatred statements and counter-statements, and of accusations .
Based on this scenario, here is a thought about secularism and India.
I think that the countries all over the world can be categorized into three groups based on their secular (or religious) nature.
1) Religious Countries – Countries where the religion practiced by its majority people has a say in the functioning of its government and the definition of the law of the land. In other words, the government is influenced by the religion practiced by its majority population.
2) Secular Countries – Countries where no religion is given preference over other religions, and the government is neutral in terms of religions, and the law of the land is same for all people irrespective of their religion.
3) Pseudo Secular Countries – Countries where the religion practiced by its majority people has NO say in the functioning of the government but the law of the land is different for people depending on their religion. In other words, the government is influenced by the religion practiced by its minority population.
Now we can debate as to which category does India belong to?

Yes, what you said is 100% correct.
It is normal human psychology where a person defines his/her “”I”" depending on one’s own classification of the universe under a given category based(biased?) on his/her emotional nearness to the subject in question.
In simple terms, suppose on the street we see two people fighting, and realize that one of them is our friend, we dont try to rescue the stranger, instead we stand by our friend.
Even when Karna knew that Duryodhana was wrong, still he stood by him. So in this case of known/unknown persons, friends defines “”I”", and any body who is not a friend comes under “”You”"
Similarly, its about language, religion, ideology etc.
Humans today fight in the name of different countries, and tomorrow if there is an alien invasion of earth, then we all will stand together and fight the aliens!
Humans do research to kill different kinds of bacteria and viruses. Why? Because here the question is about the existence of human, and we associate ourselves with humans as “”I”".
Similarly a person will fight for his family, a soldier for his country, a communist for his ideology etc.
Very few people make an attempt to look and grow beyond their definition of “”I”" and try to see with an open mind as to what are better things in “”YOU”" than in “”I”".
So this I, Me, Mine etc are natural things defined by nature not only for humans, but also amongst other species. Survival of the fittest exists in nature. To survive, you have to have that “”I”" within you. A Lion defends his area/group with utmost care against any external intrusion, Buffaloes charge against any attacking predator even if the calf belongs to some other mother in the herd, etc.. varying degrees of “”I”"ness
Humans, being intelligent and more creative, only have more means at their disposal to try to prove the superiority of their “”I”"ness.
I dont see this “”I”"ness as something that is terribly wrong. Only thing we need to be careful about is the ability to distinguish between abusive “”I”"ness and rational “”I”"ness.
Abusive “”I”"ness is personal, where one looks at the other as better or not depending upon say for instance color or riches or looks etc. Here the “”I”" in question wants to show superiority by ascribing “”inferiority”" to the “”You”". Pseudo secularism existing in our society today, definitely comes under this category.
On the other hand rational “”I”"ness is where things are not personal, but are instead based on debates, investigations, historical truths, etc. Here the “”I”" in question proves his superiority by displaying the superior qualities of his “”I”"ness and also by highlighting the shortcomings of “”You”"ness (NOT of “”You”" personally). For instance, a debate between Democracy and Communism, where “”I”" is associated with democracy and “”You”" with communism.
This second kind of discrimination based on rational logic is essential as that is the key for the development of our knowledge. If I had never debated about my “”I”"nesses, I would have not known much about them today, and still a lot more is left to be known. But the key here is to being open to understand what that “”You”"ness is. Without even studying anything about Communism, if I start saying that Democracy is better than Communism, then I will be making a fool of myself
True secularism is a type of rational “”I”"ness where you treat “”I”" and “”You”" to be equal if not same. For this to be practical, even those in the “”You”" category should treat “”I”" as their equal. One can see numerous examples in India of Hindus and Muslims celebrating their religious festivals together (I am not talking about political iftaar parties
)
Problems start here when things like missionaries and conversions enter the picture by trying to prove their superiority. When the “”You”" tries to become superior, if “”I”" doesnt respond, then “”I”" has the danger of becoming extinct! So “”I”" has to act to prove his superiority.
A lot of “”I”"ness in the world today is based on hearsay and not on personal investigation. I can bet that 99.9% of the people who protested against “”Satanic Verses”", have not even read a single line of that book! This kind of “”I”"ness makes no sense.
So what we need is an open mind to understand that “”You”" just to make sure that whether it really falls under “”I”" or “”You”". And to widen our world view so that we include as much as “”You”" as possible within the “”I”". A classic example of this world view being “”Vasudaiva Kutumbakam”" (whole world is a family) and “”Ekam Sat”" (There is only one God) mentioned in the vedas. (See how my “”I”"ness creeped in
)
And there is also the stage of being without an “”I”"ness or “”You”"ness, which is probably the stage of Nirvana/enlightenment attained by Buddha. But will life on earth will be the same if all humans become Buddha!
Or to look at it from the other “”You”" side, i.e from the point of view of Buddha,
Will life of Buddha will be the same if all humans become Buddha?

Definition of Secularism
In India:
It’s a hypothetical term… extensively used by Political parties to increase their vote bank in the name of religion…
Whole world:
It’s an extinct phenomenon … but whereever and when ever needed used by political Parties…
And yup you find these kind of terms in our Civics and Social etiquette books you see ;o)
Irony of being an Indian and Hindu… we keep on cribbing about things but what exactly we do for it… “NOTHING”
I appreciate your blogs Guru, awesome effort to bring knowledge and fact about Hindutva and Desh to young tech Savy Gen of Bharat…
But I dont agree to the fact… you, me or anyone who put their views here are secular themselves [ I don’t consider myself] mind it when I say secular, I am not constraining myself to religion … I mean region, language…. Looks or what so ever by which we Indians differentiate ourselves… paradox!!! we keep discriminating ourselves every now and then … banging…. I [as a community] is better then you…..
Well I personally don’t want to be off-putting… I really appreciate the facts that you put in your blogs Guru.. they are real knowledgeable… this is simply my point of view …

which are the current secular countries in the world?

@I=Indian.
True….
Atleast BJP provides membership to non hindus, Why doesnt PDP, Muslim League provide membership to Non-Muslims.
This doesnt means that i am a great fan of BJP.
But i would like to ask you one question?
Why do we have more than one political party?
If a single party could do all the good, then we wouldnt have had more than one party.
forget communist for a while. I dont know why they are still there ? Cant find even a single thing right in left.
I dont consider my time worth reading and writing about communist.
Congress: if they were too good then there wouldnt have been a party named BJP (as all calls a hindu party).
Well that itself proves that at some point of time congress went Pro.
They call themselves secular party.
Yes they are secular, ask Sonia Gandhi why?
I am just frustrated seeing all what is happening.
when and how we can stop this…
“”Ek Khoon Maaf kiya jaaye”", then there is solution. smiley
GD, i suggest you to have this topic for debate.
“”Ek Khoon Maaf kiya jaaye”", then what will you do?

Yes I agree with you, secularism is not being anti-religious against any religion, it is being non-religious.
AAA,
Some parties in India are communal based on their ideologies, and the remaining parties are communal based on their votebank politics. Any party involved in “”religion/caste/race based appeasement politics”" is definitely communal/racist.
I=Indian
Yes you are right. Unfortunately some people dont understand the difference between culture and religion.

Mr A(3)
Have you gone nuts? Where has anybody said anything about BJP being secular here? Or Congress being communal here? You said this because reality is biting you.
If BJP is communal in the name of Hindus, Congress and Left are communal in the name of Muslims. Go read history and have a life. Congress was initially a Hindu Party during Independence, which is why muslim league was formed and India split. Then it became a muslim party.
Have you read about Shah Bano case ever? See what Rajiv Gandhi did.
And what is did Manmohan Singh say recently? “”Muslims should be given preference for resources”". If Congress is a true secular party then he should have said “”Indians should be given preferences”", not any Muslims or Hindus.
A Congress which worries so much about minority votes, what has it done to the minorities?
As the blog writer has said in an earlier article Sachar committee report is a total failure report on the part of Congress for having faild to uplift the status of minorities in the past 60 years.
The prime minister who ‘didnt get sleep’ when terrorist suspects were arrested ‘slept happily’ in his bed when his govt said to the court that Ram did not exist.
Congress are pseudo secular by being anti-Hindu and by pretending to be Pro-Muslims.
Left are not only pseudo-secular, but are also anti-communism. There is nothing right in the left. True communist leaders like Marx and Mao will commit suicide if they come to know that Indian left calls themselves communists.
Why the hell dont you talk about Muslim League in Kerala? Isnt that a communal party?
What is wrong if “”HINDUTVA: THE GREAT NATIONALIST IDEOLOGY”" is written on BJP website. Dont you read newspapers? Hasnt Supreme Court of India declared earlier that “”Hindutva is a way of life in India”".
Only Pseudo secularists exist in India, where hindu bashing is considered secularism.

This is total nonsense. You cant just make up words like “”pseudosecularism”" and start calling names. There are secular parites ins India. Congress, Communists for example. (Note: I am not saying that they are good, they are corrupt, without vision, but you have to agree that their principle is secular). BJP is not secular by any means. Any sane person who has read the article “”HINDUTVA: THE GREAT NATIONALIST IDEOLOGY”" on BJP website will not call them secular.

This triple ‘a’ is our modern Amar Akbar Anthony???
Secularism doesnt mean making derogatory statements against a religion that you dont like, but it means thinking beyond one’s religious attachments.
What we witness in India is a complete failure of secular concepts. One Karunanidhi can not destroy the Hindu faith, mind them.
Gurudev, good categories of nations based on religion.
There are some countries that are ‘atheist’ countries.

There is no uniform civil code in India, so whether your action is punishable or not depends on your religion. Polygamy is a crime for Hindus but it is legal for muslims.

Can you find any other country in the world where its majority community are living as refugees in their own country? The only such community in the world are the Kashmiri Pandits who are the refugees in their own country, No party talks about their upliftment, why because? Neither do they form a sizeable vote bank nor do they influence a sizeable portion of the vote bank. The first primeminister of India Nehru himself was a kashmirit pandit, and see where are they today?
