My Windows Vista crashed recently due to some hardware error, showing the typical blue screen and upon restarting I received this message which said:
Superfetch has stopped working!
I didnt know what this stuff was, so went to
Administrative tools->Services
and realized that Superfetch was a windows service.
Upon doing a bit of searching on the web I realized that this service helps the operating system improve performance by caching frequently used applications or recently used applications, so that the applications load faster and the system responds quicker when the user returns to the system after a long idle time during which some system scanning or similar memory consuming activities have occurred.
I guessed that probably due to the abrupt shutdown in my system the superfetch cache might have got corrupted, and so went to its cache folder %Windows%\Prefetch and deleted all the cached files I saw there. And then restarted the superfetch service again by going to iControl Panel->Administartive Tools->Services and lo it worked like a charm! No more Superfetch has stopped working messages after that, and the service continues to run as usual!
If you are facing a similar issue, probably which is why you are on this page now
, try this tip (at your own risk). It worked for me, hopefully will solve your problem too!

Really useful advice. Just a note, sometimes in that cache folder, there is another folder named “ReadyBoot”.
After you delete everything, don’t forget to replace it with same name.
Really nice article
I have a doubt:::
Why only Microsoft Windows is prone to virus and virus never attack other operating systems? Whats the logic and why Bill Gates is a fool not to understand it?
Useless advice since it doesn’t tell you how to find the relevant cache folder. Typical techo I’m afraid – tries to be helpful but talks in a way that doesn;t actually explain what to do
Well, if you read the article again carefully, the cache folder path is also mentioned – %Windows%Prefetch
Where in %Windows% is your windows installation folder which typically would be C:Windows or C:WinNT
