The First Prayer by the Hindus is always offered to Lord Ganesh who is to be worshipped before worshipping any other force of nature.

Hinduism worships nature. Every form of nature is a God in Hinduism and the entire universe is part of the supreme cosmic consciousness called the Nirguna Brahma ie the attributeless God. The Nirguna Brahman is eternal and is timeless, infinite and extends beyond the temporary physical universe which we live in.

Nirguna Brahman or the attributeless supreme consciousness gives birth to the Saguna Brahman ie the Physical Universe which we live in and which is complete with all the possible attributes. All other forms of nature are derived from the Saguna Brahman.

Saguna Brahman can be described where as Nirguna Brahman cannot be described. Which is why the vedas described the Nirguna Brahman as Neti Neti meaning neither this nor that.

Lord Ganesh is the God of directions and the God who removes all Obstacles. He would free all the directions for us so that our subsequent prayers can reach their corresponding deities and will also remove all obstacles coming from any direction in our life. Hence the first prayer is always offered to Lord Ganesh.

Also when undertaking any prominent task, project or work in our life, the first prayer is always offered to Lord Ganesh to help us overcome all the obstacles that we might face during the execution of our task.
